Writing Documentary Films
Documentary films are more popular and prevalent than ever, appearing in theaters, on DVD, and across the spectrum of TV channels. Any subject is fair game: political controversy (Fahrenheit 9/11), research findings (Super Size Me), personal drama (Hoop Dreams), historical narrative (The Civil War), the little niches of life (Spellbound). They can run the length of a mini-series or be as brief as a short film. Documentary films are not just the result of hauling around a camera and sound equipment; they are carefully crafted pieces of nonfiction storytelling. In this course, you will learn how to conceive ideas, structure stories, conduct research and interviews, write narration, and adapt your plans to the footage you get. You will also learn how and where to market your work.
